Breast-conservative surgery (BCS)
A treatment plan for breast cancer may include breast-conserving surgery (BCS). Some refer to it as a partial mastectomy or a lumpectomy.
Modified radical mastectomy
With a modified radical mastectomy, the areola, nipple, skin, and breast tissue are all removed. The removal of nearby lymph nodes is necessary. The chest wall muscles are spared during a modified radical mastectomy.
Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB)
It is a surgical procedure commonly used to stage certain cancers, particularly breast cancer and melanoma. The procedure involves identifying and removing the sentinel lymph nodes using blue dye, radionucleotide or infra-red camera. They are the first lymph nodes to which tumour cells are likely to spread from the primary tumour. Complete axillary dissections can be avoided in patients in whom sentinel node is negative for metastasis and thereby reduces the complications associated with axillary nodal dissection.
Oncoplastic breast surgery
Oncoplastic breast surgery combines oncologic and plastic surgery principles to achieve optimal cancer treatment and preserve breast appearance. It is commonly used in breast cancer treatment, especially for breast-conserving surgery and aims to remove cancerous tissue while enhancing the breast's aesthetic appearance. It is done by mobilizing the local breast tissue to the defect of lumpectomy to fill it.
Breast reconstructive surgery
Breast reconstructive surgery is a specialised procedure that helps women who have undergone mastectomy or lumpectomy regain the natural shape and appearance of their breast. It aims to boost their self-esteem and quality of life after breast cancer treatment and requires the expertise of a skilled surgeon. It is done by harvesting the muscle from other part of the body to fill the defect formed after the surgery and usually includes placement of implants along with muscle flaps.
