Surgical Oncology is a specialized area of oncology that engages surgeons in the cure and management of cancer. The main aim of surgical oncology is to efficiently work through local tumour excision, regional lymph node removal, handling of cancer recurrence (local or widespread) and in some cases, using surgical resection of metastases from the primary tumour.
The process is a combination of radiation therapy and chemotherapy. It's necessary for the patient to consult the surgical oncologist before the surgery. The outcome of the surgical procedure is dependent on the diagnosis and also the area of the body the surgery is to be carried out on.
